Untethered Paws

R-U-Ok? We are here.

Grief becomes gratitude when you give their memory a place to live.

These are the rituals that helped me — and might help you.

🌸 Creating a Memory Garden

After Jiraiya passed, I couldn't look at his harness. But I couldn't throw it away either.

🌿 What I did:

  • Washed his harness and collar with mild soap
  • Placed them over a small tomato cage
  • Added his favorite toy (a squeaky hedgehog)
  • Planted a small rosemary bush inside (he loved rolling in rosemary)
  • Wrapped his leash around the pot

Now every morning I water the rosemary and say his name.

🎗️ What to Do With Their Service Dog Gear

💝 Ideas that helped others:

  • Shadow box display – Vest, collar, tags, photo, and paw print in a deep frame
  • Donate to a training program – Many accept retired gear for new teams in training
  • Turn into a memory pillow – Sew their vest into a small cushion
  • Leash as a key holder – Hang it by the door where they used to wait
  • ID tag on your keychain – Carry them with you everywhere

🎨 Permanent & Physical Tributes

🐾 Paw print keepsakes:

  • Clay paw print ornament (many vets offer this)
  • Ink paw print on canvas
  • Custom jewelry with their nose or paw print
  • Framed paw print + photo shadow box

🖤 Tattoos:

  • Their paw print on your wrist or ankle
  • Their name with their birth and crossing dates
  • A portrait of their face
  • Their favorite flower or symbol

🕯️ Grief Rituals That Help

📝 Write them a letter

Tell them what you didn't get to say. Burn it, bury it, or keep it in a box.

🕯️ Light a candle

Every Sunday evening, light a candle in their memory. Let it burn while you sit with them.

🎵 Create a playlist

Songs that remind you of them. Listen when you need to cry.

👣 Walk their favorite trail

Once a year, on their crossing date, walk where they loved to walk. Say their name out loud.

📸 Annual photo day

On their birthday, go through old photos. Share one on social media. Let others remember them too.
