Untethered Paws

R-U-Ok? We are here.

Palliative care is not giving up. It is choosing quality over quantity.

It is saying: "I will not let you suffer just to keep you here one more day."

This is what I learned in the last years of Miko and Jiraiya's lives โ€” so you do not have to learn it alone.

๐Ÿ“ธ Remembering Miko & Jiraiya

Two working partners. Two lifetimes of love.

๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ The 3 Bad Days Rule

Veterinarians don't like giving exact timelines. But several hospice vets shared a simple scale that saved me from second-guessing.

3

Bad days in a row = time to have the conversation

Choose 3 things your senior dog still enjoys. For Miko, it was:

When a dog has 3 bad days in a row โ€” meaning they refuse all 3 joys โ€” quality of life has dropped below acceptable.

โš ๏ธ Signs of silent suffering in senior working dogs

  • Panting when resting (pain)
  • Avoiding eye contact (learned to hide weakness)
  • Not greeting you at the door
  • Groaning when lying down or getting up
  • Changes in sleep patterns (sleeping all day or unable to settle)
  • Loss of interest in favorite toys or people

๐Ÿ“‹ Palliative Care Checklist

What I did for Miko and Jiraiya in their last 6-12 months:

๐Ÿ  Home Modifications

  • โœ… Carpet runners on all hard floors (prevent slipping)
  • โœ… Raised food and water bowls (easier on neck and joints)
  • โœ… Orthopedic memory foam bed
  • โœ… Ramps instead of stairs (for beds, couches, cars)
  • โœ… Non-slip socks or paw wax for traction

๐Ÿ’Š Medical & Comfort Care

  • โœ… Monthly vet acupuncture (reduced inflammation)
  • โœ… Laser therapy for arthritis
  • โœ… Gabapentin + Carprofen (under vet supervision)
  • โœ… CBD oil (consult your vet first)
  • โœ… Regular gentle massage
  • โœ… Warm compresses on sore joints

๐Ÿงผ Hygiene & Dignity

  • โœ… Doggy diapers (when incontinence started)
  • โœ… Waterless shampoo for between baths
  • โœ… Frequent grooming to prevent mats and skin irritation
  • โœ… Elevated potty area (if standing is hard)

๐Ÿฅฃ Nutrition & Appetite

When Miko stopped eating, I panicked. Here is what I learned:

โš ๏ธ When to call the vet about eating

If your dog refuses food for more than 48 hours, or is drinking excessively or not at all โ€” call your veterinarian immediately.

๐Ÿ’ฌ How to Talk to Your Vet About Palliative Care

Many vets default to "heroic measures." You have the right to say no.

Questions to ask your vet:

  • "What is the expected quality of life with this treatment?"
  • "Will this extend life or just prolong suffering?"
  • "What are the signs that it is time to stop treatment?"
  • "Can we focus on comfort instead of cure?"
  • "Do you offer in-home euthanasia referrals?"

You are allowed to say no to: surgery with low success rates, chemotherapy for elderly dogs, extended hospital stays, painful procedures with minimal benefit.

๐Ÿ’– A note on guilt

Choosing palliative care does not mean you love your dog less. It means you love them enough to let go of your own need for more time. Miko taught me that. Jiraiya confirmed it.

๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ The Last Week โ€“ What to Expect

These signs mean the body is beginning to shut down:

Do not wait for a "natural death" if they are suffering.

The final gift you can give is a peaceful, painless goodbye.
